Since its founding in 1992, Allen EDC activities have added $24.35 billion to the regional economy, according to a study by Dallas-based Insight Research Corp. The report looks at economic employment and tax revenue of about 90 AEDC programs.
Elizabeth Morris, CEO and chief economist for Insight Research Corp., said more than 18,000 jobs have been created in Allen since 1993, with 70 percent of those directly attributable to AEDC support.
An increase in the appraised value of commercial property in Allen can also be linked to AEDC efforts, according to the study. Properties related to AEDC projects have represented $1.19 billion in appraised value during the past 19 years, or 57.5 percent of Allen’s current commercial tax base.
The group’s impact doesn’t just show up on paper, said Dan Bowman, interim economic development director. “You see it when you drive the major highways and thoroughfares of our city,” he said. “You see it in Cabela’s and KONE and the dozens of new retail outlets and restaurants.”
Since 1992, the AEDC has recruited more than 70 new businesses to Allen, which have helped increase the city’s total ad valorem tax base from $729 million to $8 billion in 2011.
